wyrd bið ful aræd
Welcome to Ruff’s RPG #1 “Wyrd bið ful aræd.”
This campaign is very (very very) loosely based on the history of England in the late 800s thru early 900s CE. This was the period when the Saxons and the Danes were contending for England, which at the time was divided among several small kingdoms (e.g. Wessex, East Anglia, Mercia, Northumbria, etc.) with the Welsh and Scots (and occasionally the Irish) raiding into bordering areas.
The battle was not only between the (Anglo-)Saxons and the Danes, but also between waxing Christians and the waning Pagans. Many Danes began to convert to Christianity at this time, and most of the Saxons had already converted. Alfred the Great, King of Wessex, began to style himself “King of Angle Land” and, although he did not succeed in uniting the kingdoms of England before his death, he is credited with being the “founder” of England.
“Wyrd bið ful aræd” is an Old English saying, and loosely translates to “Fate is inexorable.”
Well, that’s how it started. Party is now staging out of Venice, working as troubleshooters for a Merchant’s Association.
